AMEXICA aims at exploring the symbolic beyond the geopolitical by way of the personal and the popular, the lived experiences of the artists, the collector and the curator in a selection of works inspired by, coming from, dealing with, and aiming at Mexico.

AMEXICA intends to provoke questions about current notions of territoriality by appropriating a term coined in investigative journalism to describe the land of brutal contradictions born out of the indivisible economic relationships between Mexico, its neighbors and the USA, concretised in 1994 with the signing of the recently revamped North American Free Trade Agreement.

Circulation and the current globalized landscape of endless exchange and reinvention are central notions in the exhibition of over twenty artists, mostly but not exclusively from Mexico, and mostly but not exclusively from Mexico City, that are present in the year-long exhibition.

Taking the Servais Family Collection as a platform, AMEXICA is informed by other exhibitions devoted to Mexico, among the most recent presented in Francophone Europe: Mexique: 1900-1950, (Grand Palais, 2016-2017) and Eldorado (2019, lille3000). AMEXICA, proposes a different approach to the art of a region wounded by violence but one that remains proud, caustic and bellicose; a region that resists pigeonholing and victimization and that, instead, constantly reinvents itself despite the political, the official and the neo-colonial, continuing to attract the imagination, curiosity and passion of artists and collectors alike.
