(Refusing to) write history through exhibition-making
In constant flux and endless professionalization, the role of a curator is both essential and perplexing, subject to numerous misunderstandings, conscious and unconscious flaws. One of the latter is the understanding of the curator as a history maker, thus a gate keeper, and thus, a de-facto setter of ideology. In this talk, and based in my experience as guest curator of the Dakar Biennale, I will address the refusal of writing history through exhibitions as a curatorial stand that chooses instead to facilitate the conditions and dialogues for art to develop in excess, overflowing the margins of the ideologies that seek to contain it, including those of written history.

Mexican Comics: Post-Revolutionary Sensibilities, Reactive Counterculture & Digital Tools. Facing
up to the Present Challenges? (with Dr Ernesto Priego)
Comics were the first mass media in Mexico. While the subsequent decades were characterised by the decline of the industry, since the 1970s a new generation of artists informed by their own history, reactive to the countercultural movements abroad and active in the national scene began to consolidate. Today, younger artists use the latest tools of the digital age to shake off the shackles that once defined a comic's success or failure. This panel will explore, through a critical dialogue between comics scholars Ernesto Priego and Marisol Rodríguez, the ways in which Mexico developed a vast tradition of graphic literature that up to now has never reached its last page, and in which ways it is facing up -or not- to the country's present challenges.

Rarotonga or the exotic idea of women’s empowerment in a vintage Mexican comic
"While most of the stories that make up this saga take place somewhere in Latin America, the space where Rarotonga’s powers most clearly manifest is far from the mainland. Her kingdom, a volcanic island in the middle of the ocean, is indeed a territory where she is allowed to display all her dominance. [...]
This paper will introduce and contextualize the story of Rarotonga and it will explore the social implications of her traveling between these two symbolic spaces where her story unfolds."

An unruly way into Mexican comic books: El Libro Vaquero
"After 36 years of almost uninterrupted success there is little written about this historieta. The analysis of a cultural product of such ubiquitousness is important for Mexican cultural history and comics scholarship as a whole. This paper will trace the history and facts about this comic book, one that acts as a mere door into the poorly explored world of Latin American comix after the dawn of its Golden Era."
